In the 1980s, filmmaker Jeremy Marre traveled throughout China to chronicle the fledgling renaissance of traditional Chinese music, long suppressed by the communist Cultural Revolution and governmental prohibition. This compelling film documents one of the few remaining players of the quqin, an instrument akin to a zither; a master of the pipa, a kind of traditional lute; a temple drummer; a lively rural wedding celebration; and more.
