For all the invocations of "the angel of music," this film, adapted from the curiously popular stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, will most likely leave you with a devilish headache. This 2 hour and 20 minute barrage may drive you back to the 1925 version of "Phantom," which starred Lon Chaney and which has many virtues. For one thing, it is short. For another, it's silent. — A.
