NYT Review: New Tenants in Tinseltown

Jonathan Larson’s beloved musical is as loud, earnest and sentimental as ever. But somehow, as it has made the transition to the screen almost a decade after its theatrical debut (with much of the original stage cast), the show has dated less than objections to it. Yes, the East Village was never really like this, but in Chris Columbus’s hands, the hectic updating of La Boheme to the age of AIDS and gentrification feels surprisingly sweet and fresh. — A. O.
