Dreaming Lhasa

Karma (Tenzin Chokyi Gyatso), a Tibetan filmmaker from New York, journeys to the Dalai Lama's exile headquarters in northern India to make a documentary about political prisoners. One of her interviewees is Dhondup (Jampa Kalsang), an ex-monk with a mission to fulfill his mother's dying wish. Karma falls for him, gets drawn into his quest and soon finds herself pulled deeper into India's exiled Tibetan community in this poignant drama.

Whenever the filmmakers stray from Dhondup's story (and the tales of other refugees), they tend to lose their way.
John Hartl, Seattle Times  full review

The fictional story incorporates harrowing documentary testimony from former Tibetan political prisoners, but essentially this is a hopeful look at a resilient people keeping their traditions alive as they move into the digital age.
Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader  full review

Dreaming Lhasa goes a long way on the strength of its exotic visuals and gently urgent narrative, but in the end it doesn't go quite far enough.
Ty Burr, Boston Globe  full review

A sensitive if literal-minded tale that demonstrates how Tibet's national identity is of a piece with its spiritual heart.
Robert Koehler, Variety  full review

A static and awkward effort that never quite comes to life.
Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

Manages to enchant with its simplicity and scenery.
Bill Stamets, Chicago Sun-Times  full review

Dreaming Lhasa is a fine example of how feature films can be used to deliver urgent political messages, but its dramatic elements waver.
Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times  full review

The adverts promise a voyage to Tibet like we've never seen, but Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam's vision of people unmoored from their homeland is a familiar and banal embossment of foreign anguish.
Ed Gonzalez, Village Voice  full review
