The Hebrew Hammer

This hilarious tribute to the Blaxploitation genre stars Adam Goldberg as Mordechai, an Orthodox Jewish "superhero detective" who joins the Jewish Justice League to stop the evil machinations of Damien (the always-wacky Andy Dick), son of Santa (Richard Riehle), who aims to wipe out Hanukkah from calendars forever. Mordechai and his sidekick, Esther (Judy Greer), enlist the aid of Mohammed (Mario Van Peebles), a superhero protecting Kwanzaa.

Profane, shockingly un-PC and often laugh-out-loud hilarious, this is the sort of parody that the folks who made the Airplane and Naked Gun movies used to make -- funny. full review

Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

The result is explicit, if less than hilarious. full review

J. Hoberman, Village Voice

Kesselman keeps the movie crackling with the raucous energy absent since Mel Brooks' heyday. full review

Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

Desperation is the project's principal quality.

Mark Jenkins, Washington Post

The movie hits as much as it misses, with enough witty observations to ensure that somewhere, Kesselman's mother is kvelling. full review

Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

Kesselman's thin script generally is funniest when it's riffing on Jewish stereotypes and goyish bigotry. full review

David Rooney, Variety

You may not always laugh at it. But you can't help indulging its junior-high jitters. full review

Gene Seymour, Newsday

A crass, sophomoric and, more to the point, offensively unfunny parody.

Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

A hit-and-miss affair.

Megan Lehmann, New York Post

Would have worked brilliantly as a five-minute late-night comedy sketch. full review

A.O. Scott, New York Times

Unfunny rather than outrageous as intended. full review

Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

An insubstantial but highly entertaining flick. full review

Matt Weitz, Dallas Morning News
