In 15th century France, Francois is a patriot and carouser. After he insults the Duke of Burgundy he's banished from Paris. When the Duke plans to have an associate marry the king's ward, Francois stops it but is sentenced to death. Then he exploits the king's superstitious nature to give him a reprieve.

After hearing the story of Moses, the sons of a religious mother separate, and one brother's breaking of the Ten Commandments leads to tragedy.
