Cast adrift in Los Angeles, Sean, a lonely TV weatherman, drives past a middle-aged Latino migrant worker standing outside a hardware store looking for work. He decides to hire this kind-looking man, to be his friend. Sean is young, gay and white; Ernesto, portly, straight and married. Despite having nothing in common and the language barrier, they build a sort of friendship.

Nena, an optimistic and perpetually human-loving German, has flown to California to see her favourite band, Blonde Priest, perform live at a giant music festival. Far less human-loving is Varnie, a broke venture capitalist who has just learned his girlfriend is pregnant and has done a runner. After a chance encounter, Varnie offers Nena a lift, and they hit the road together. As they drive their white convertible down the coast of California, meeting a host of quirky characters, Nena’s faith in human nature is severely tested and Varnie has to come to terms with life’s responsibilities. "Along The Roadside" is a uniquely funny, gentle and poignant road movie about two people from different worlds who fit perfectly together.
