Phyllis Calvert

Nominated for six BAFTAs in 1952, Ealing classic Mandy is the heart-rending adaptation of Hilda Lewis's novel The Day is Ours, from acclaimed director Alexander Mackendrick (The Man in the White Suit, Whisky Galore!). Born deaf, Mandy (Mandy Miller) is mute for most of her childhood. As she reaches school age, Mandy's mother, Christine (Phyllis Calvert, Mr. Denning Drives North), wants to enroll her in a special residential school for the deaf, run by dynamic and gifted teacher, Searle (Jack Hawkins, Angels One Five). But her husband, Harry (Terence Morgan), disagrees, wishing to have her home-schooled.

Clarissa is a lovely debutante who enters into an arranged marriage with a wealthy Marquis. He does not love her but desires an heir, which she duly produces. Trouble starts when an old 'friend' of Clarissa's arrives to stay.

Investigating the murder of a postal inspector, Al Goddard follows up a lead from the only witness, a nun. Goddard infiltrates a band of thieves, but he is suspected by psychotic Joe Regas and must lie and cheat to convince him.
