A massive earth tremor opens a deep crevasse in the California dessert, releasing a bizarre and deadly breed of foot-long cockroaches which threaten to destroy the city of Riverside before spreading across the country.

Elizabeth (Pamela Franklin) is not convinced that her sister's death was a suicide. But since the police refuse to investigate, Elizabeth decides to enroll in her sister's school and look into the matter herself. She learns there have been a number of other student suicides and begins hearing whispers that the school has a dark, satanic secret. Knowing too much, Elizabeth and her friends Roberta (Kate Jackson) and Jody (Cheryl Stoppelmoor) must now escape the grip of the occult.

Clint Eastwood directs this story of a disillusioned businessman who tries to isolate himself at his beach house but is unable to turn away a free-spirited girl who appears on his doorstep.
