1937. The council whom Bill works for are turning to motor transport to replace the horse and cart. Bill, unable to accept the change, buys his horse and sets off to seek work in the country. He encounters many folk that he helps along the way.

George Bird has been told by his Doctor that he only has a short time left to live and is determined not to waste his final days.
