Everything changes for two sailors on shore leave when they inadvertently become caught up in a crime as murky as the great river itself. Alec Guinness stars as Peter Ross, a World War II pilot photographer, who is forced to land in Malta. There he finds himself attached to the local regiment and on studying aerial photographs he discovers that Italy is preparing to invade Malta. It is of vital importance that the island remains under the control of the Allies, and Peter is the man selected to trace and destroy the enemy convoy.

Rasputin, a drunken and licentious monk, is a sinister figure with hypnotic powers. By using them on the Tsarina's lady-in-waiting, he ingratiates himself with the Tsarina herself, thus enjoying a profound influence on her. He becomes increasingly ambitious and, after he has hypnotized the Tsarina into committing suicide, three men decide that he must be eliminated. But he won't die that easily...
