Roy Tunt, a birdwatcher in a hide on the Suffolk mudflats awaiting a sighting of the rare sociable plover. Into the hide crashes Dave John, muddy, blood-stained, edgy. As the two men talk, they discover they have a lot in common and begin to form a friendship until a newsflash on Roy's radio giving news of a police manhunt sets them both on a path to tragedy.
