Things really get shaken up when an aspiring opera singer becomes involved with a bawdy saloon owner and his high-society rival during the devastating earthquake of 1906.

Grace Moore is a struggling opera singer who goes to Europe after losing a radio talent contest. Singing teacher Carminati is impressed after hearing her sing in a cafe. He takes her on as a student and develops her voice, while she falls in love with him.

Nick and Nora are summoned to New Year's dinner at Nora's aristocratic family in San Francisco where they learn that cousin Selma's husband Robert is missing. Nick agrees to look for him but when Robert is shot Selma is accused of murder.
